From Moscow to San Mateo: Irina Mudraya’s Journey of Resilience and Learning

The corridors of San Mateo Adult & Career Education (SMACE) have echoed with stories of transformation and resilience, but few are as inspiring as that of Irina Mudraya, a former medical researcher from the Soviet Union.

Born in the territory of modern Ukraine, Irina enjoyed a happy childhood and a successful career in medical research. Her journey took her from Ukraine to Moscow, where she thrived in the bustling epicenter of Russian science, technology, and culture. Yet, in 2001, a new chapter beckoned as her first granddaughter was born in America.

“California became my third home,” Irina reflects. Drawn by family and the promise of a more stable and creative environment, she decided to move permanently. But the transition was not without challenges. “I could have been just a quiet grandmother,” she recalls, “but SMACE turned the third page of my life, making it independent, busy, and full of new activities.”

A Warm Welcome

Upon her arrival, Irina began attending ESL classes at SMACE. Although her visits were initially sporadic, the school’s friendly atmosphere and engaging lessons left a lasting impression. “The energy of the teachers was contagious,” she says. “Their dedication made it a shame not to work hard.”

Unlike the more rigid teaching styles she was accustomed to in Russia, SMACE instructors shared their own life stories, fostering a sense of equality and camaraderie among the students. “We learned not just grammar, but American history and art,” Irina explains. “This approach was instrumental in helping us feel at home.”

Tailored Learning Experiences

SMACE’s diverse range of classes catered to Irina’s varied interests and needs. From job-seeking workshops to citizenship classes, she found the support she needed to navigate her new life. “The job-seeking classes were a great experience, even though I couldn’t apply them immediately due to family duties,” she notes.

Preparing for US citizenship was another significant milestone. “The citizenship class made the process much easier than if I had done it on my own,” Irina says. Additionally, she participated in a writing class, despite often missing lessons due to her responsibilities as a grandmother.

Giving Back

Inspired by the support she received, Irina chose to volunteer at SMACE and the SF Opera. “Volunteering at school allows me to help other international students understand American life,” she explains. At the SF Opera, she enjoys maintaining the atmosphere of love for art and music, with the added bonus of watching performances.

Building Lifelong Friendships

Perhaps the most cherished outcome of her journey at SMACE has been the friendships formed along the way. “I’ve made friends from different countries and continents,” Irina beams. “We meet on Zoom, organize family gatherings, and explore new places together. These friendships have made my life in America rich and fulfilling.”

A Bright Future

Reflecting on her journey, Irina is grateful for the independence and fulfillment she found at SMACE. “I can’t imagine what I would do in America without my new friends and the community at SMACE,” she says. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the enduring strength of human connections.
