This course will introduce students to the principles of introduction to healthcare basics and communication and is designed to integrate literacy workforce preparation and workforce training. This course is an excellent way to explore the medical field.

Students will learn to:

  • Recognize the organization of the human body and learn directional terms
  • Define prefixes, root words, and suffixes used in medical terminology
  • Develop a basic vocabulary of medical terms used for diseases, patient conditions, diagnostic procedures, tests, equipment, and prescriptions
  • Recognize medical abbreviations and acronyms
  • Accurately pronounce and use medical terms in the appropriate context
  • Develop skills for appropriate healthcare communication
  • Become familiar with drug dosage forms and routes of drug administration
  • Order a prescription refill on behalf of the patient, read a medication label, and know how to locate pharmacies in the area
  • Understand medical charts and health information documentation
  • Identify the basic rules of patient privacy
