Love brought me here
Shirley Pinheiro
I was born in Brazil, where I worked for many years as a journalist. Nine years ago, love brought me to the United States when I fell in love with a sailor. Love was greater than my terrible English, and with the support of the San Mateo Adult School, I have built a new life here — I became a U.S. citizen, found my place in the community, and gained the skills and confidence to pursue my dreams in this new country.
I am deeply grateful for everything I have learned at San Mateo Adult School, where I completed the entire ESL program — from Speaking & Listening and Pronunciation to Writing and Job/Career Preparation. Through these courses, I progressed from struggling to communicate to confidently volunteering in the community, taking classes at the College of San Mateo, completing a mediation course, and even securing a job.
One of the proudest moments of my journey was receiving the “Commendation of the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County” for my volunteer work with the San Mateo Adult School group and the San Mateo Census Bureau. I had the honor of giving presentations to immigrants in adult education schools across the county, helping them understand the importance of participating in the Census.
San Mateo Adult and Career Education is a lifeline — not only for me but for our entire immigrant community, which represents 35% of San Mateo residents. This school empowers us with education, opportunity, and hope, providing training we need to thrive.
I remain forever grateful for everything I have learned and I try to give back by volunteering as Student Ambassador, sharing a little of all that I have received.
My heart is full of love and gratitude for all the teachers and staff of this excellent school.
Thank you so much SMACE
